According to WHO, lifestyle is an important factor of health, and 60% of the quality of life is correlated to our lifestyle. As like other diseases, lifestyle like diet, smoking or drinking alcohol has a significant influence in treating psoriasis too. Till the early 1900s, it was only an assumption. But now it’s proven that changes in lifestyle like changing diet, avoid smoking or doing exercise has a great impact in treating psoriasis.
Recently, cochrane.org had run a survey on 1163 psoriasis patients in 10 trials including changes in different lifestyles like diet, smoking, and alcohol abstinence to get a clear idea how lifestyle influences psoriasis treatment. They were able to get some amazing results which will help all dermatologists as well as psoriasis patients to get rid of psoriasis faster than ever. Here, we will try to present the key outcomes (based on diet and exercise) of their survey in brief.
They mainly run four trials based on diet and exercise like below:
- Low-calorie diet+ exercise
- Low-calorie diet+ no exercise
- Normal Diet+ exercise
- Normal diet+ no exercise
Based on this survey regarding exercise and diet; they found that low-calorie diet with some exercise has a great impact in treating psoriasis and there is no significant difference found among three other groups. Whatever, they got the point of “BMI” from above four trials. They found that improving BMI can reduce the severity of psoriasis. The result is something new in case of treating psoriasis, and surely it will help dermatologist to treat psoriasis for obese patients.
So, the survey ends in a final result that improving BMI may reduce the severity of psoriasis, which a psoriasis patient can obtain by a low-calorie diet and some exercises.
Though there were no data about trials on alcohol abstinence or smoking cessation, it’s proven from the survey that a healthy lifestyle can help in treating psoriasis. We would like to suggest psoriasis patients that beyond taking medications they should try to improve BMI, avoid smoking and alcohol to increase their chance of being well soon from psoriasis.
